Thinking About Buying a Hog?

Here's How We Make It Simple.

If you've ever looked into buying a whole or half hog, you've probably realized it can feel a little intimidating.

Suddenly you're staring at a cut sheet asking questions you never expected to answer.

Should the ham be fresh or smoked?

Do you want the pork belly left whole or made into bacon?

How thick should your pork chops be?

What exactly is a jowl?

For many families, it's enough to make them close the webpage and decide they'll figure it out another day.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Buying a Hog Shouldn't Feel Overwhelming

At Grid Iron Hill Farm, we've learned that most families aren't looking to become butchers. They simply want to fill their freezer with exceptional pork they can feel good about feeding the people they love.

That's why we now offer two simple options.

Option One: Customize Your Whole Hog

If you've purchased a hog before or already know exactly how you'd like every cut prepared, our Whole Hog is the perfect choice.

You'll work directly with us to customize your cutting instructions so your freezer is filled exactly the way your family likes it.

Option Two: Our Curated Half Hog

If all those cutting instructions sound overwhelming, we've already done the hard work for you.

Our Curated Half Hog is built around the cuts my own family requests time and time again.

Pork chops.

Naturally smoked bacon.

Uncured smoked hams.

Flavorful sausage.

Roasts.

Ground pork.

Ribs.

And several premium cuts that many people never even know to ask for.

Instead of wondering if you're making the right decisions, you can simply reserve your share knowing everything has already been thoughtfully selected.

Great Pork Starts Long Before Processing Day

A great meal doesn't begin in the kitchen.

It begins with how the animal is raised.

Every pig at Grid Iron Hill Farm is born right here on our farm in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

They spend their entire lives here and never leave our property until processing day.

Their home is made up of acres of woods where they spend their days rooting through leaves, wallowing in mud holes, exploring, and foraging—simply living the way pigs were created to live.

They're fed a tested, chemical-free, non-GMO ration that's free from corn, soy, and shellfish.

We never use growth hormones—not even our breeding animals.

We never use antibiotics.

We never vaccinate.

Healthy animals raised in a clean, low-stress environment simply don't require those interventions.

Why Low Stress Matters

One part of raising pork that many people never think about is stress immediately before processing.

It matters because:

Stress causes the release of adrenaline and other hormones that can negatively affect the tenderness, texture, and overall eating quality of pork.

That's why I personally load and unload every one of our pigs.

They've been handled throughout their lives, so the trip is calm, familiar, and as low stress as possible.

From the day they are born until the day they leave the farm, every decision we make is centered around caring well for both the animals and the families they'll eventually feed.

Why We Chose Heritage Genetics

Not all pork is created equal.

After a great deal of research, we chose a Heritage Mulefoot × Berkshire cross because of the qualities these breeds consistently produce.

Beautiful marbling.

Deep, rich color.

Exceptional tenderness.

Old-fashioned pork flavor that's increasingly difficult to find today.

The genetics are just one piece of the puzzle, but they're an important one.

Simple Ingredients Are Important To Us

We believe great pork doesn't need to be hidden behind artificial ingredients.

Our bacon and hams are naturally smoked and uncured without nitrates, nitrites, MSG, or added sugars.

Our sausage is seasoned with simple herbs and spices—not fillers or ingredients you can't pronounce.

When you start with exceptional pork, you don't have to cover it up.

What Our Customers Tell Us

One of the comments we hear most often is:

"This is the best bacon we've ever had."

Another favorite:

"We can't find breakfast sausage like yours anywhere else."

Those comments mean a lot to us because they tell us all the little decisions—from genetics and feed to handling and processing—are making a difference where it matters most: around your family's table.
